Mobile technology in social media in past

The Past

In Past, social media technology was location-based. To describe the mobile social media in past, I would like to talk about proximity dating. In past, we had mobile services that allowed users to do the mobile dating which further extends to proximity dating. These mobile services allow users to share information about themselves and allow communicating as location based. In order to increase the usability of these services, dating websites focus attention on users that share the same social network and proximity. Usually these services are free for users but pay fee is applied to users who are interesting in dating and messaging. They charged per message by these service providing sites. This service provider was using the Bluetooth technology to connect those people who are in the range of Bluetooth at different locations (location-based). This started known as dating.

In mobile-mad Japan, "proximity dating" has had a big success. As in Internet dating, you complete a profile of both yourself and your desired partner. Instead of suggesting people to exchange e-mails with, the service rings you on your cell phone to let you know that someone with a matching profile is within a few hundred yards of you, and allows you to arrange to meet them. Since high bandwidth mobile technology is now available in Japan, the system can also allow you to see each other on your mobile videophone before you meet.

When Web 1.0 introduced, it made it easier to had personal pages on the web. Moreover, groups had been for ages like in yahoo. We had mother club, church groups and education group in past. The major constraint was the very few people had cell that had GPS. As I already mention, mobile technology was location based which implies we were not advanced enough to communicate with each other independently.

Social Media and .... Business?

We all know and love the benefits that social media sites like Facebook and Twitter provide us with in our social lives, but have you ever stopped to think about how corporations could use social media in business?!

The face of marketing is changing rapidly with the advancement of social media and buzzwords that once proved to be vital are becoming less and less important.  Professionals say that in order to get marketing right, you need to start building relationships first.  Although selling may be the end result, you must first develop and work on a relationship with consumers.

A number of companies including Starbucks and Apple have tapped into this fad by showing their consumers that their opinions matter.  Starbucks created a page on the web where customers can comment and make suggestions on how to improve the company.  The comments are viewable by other consumers and a representative from Starbucks acknowledges each suggestion.

Apple who has always focused on their customer relations also shows consumers that their opinion matters by using email after they visit a retail store location.  Apple sends customers an email asking them to rate their overall experiences at the retail store and a representative from the specific location personally addresses all concerns directly with the customer.

Businesses are also using Social networking for productivity.  With the advancement in email reliability and security businesses can effortlessly share documentation with the click of a button.  Businesses can also seek experienced job candidates using websites such as linkedin and other job posting websites which allows them to view a large amount of candidates in a short period of time.

Overall the advancement of social media has made it possible for businesses to run smoother than ever.  Businesses are able to be extremely productive in a short matter of time while collaborating with colleagues and partners abroad.

What's Distance?

Mobile social media has made it's way into the homes of people internationally, and with its new found popularity people have been more connected than ever.

Mobile social media is revolutionary and has allowed for people to connect effortlessly.  Checking in on somebodies day has never been easier, special life moments don't have to be missed because of distance and people "drift apart" far less often.

Social networking applications on mobile devices allow for people to "check in" throughout the day and give people an idea of what they're doing.  This means that their friends and family can always see what they're up to, even who they're with and a picture of where they are.  Mobile devices such as smart phones even allow for people to shoot a quick email, Facebook message or text message on the fly making it easier than ever to communicate with people.  Mobile social media is convenient and it's only getting better.

Recently with the launch of the Apple iPhone4, a newer technology known as FaceTime has been brought into the public eye.  Now, not only can individuals send "text" messages or still images to their loved ones,  they can also share live life moments over their smart phones as well.  The Apple iPhone commercial shares special moments in life being shared via FaceTime.. but I don't want to ruin it for you, watch for yourself!

Is Social media just hype or is it the biggest moment?

Well, 96% of generation say yes and has joined a social network. Radio took 38 years to reach 50million users, television 13 years, Internet 4 years. But a social networking site Facebook added 100 million users in less than 9 months. If it were a country it would be the 4th largest in the world, i.e. China, India, USA and Facebook. As soon as the mobile social media arrived, 80% of Facebook and Twitter usage is on mobile devices. People can update their choices anywhere anytime. There are over 200,000,000 blogs on the internet. 34% of bloggers post opinions about products and brands using mobile devices. But it doesn’t mean that we all like what they say. According to popular surveys, 78% of consumers trust peer recommendation and only 14% trust advertising. In mobile media we won’t need to search for products and services. They will find us via social media. Mobile Social media is not hype, it is a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.

Moreover, there are lot of softwares that set on every single phone to watch, upload and download photos, videos etc. Even businesses are beginning to realize that they can use both the mobile and social network to transact their business.

Mobile is absolutely right, especially it relates to the consumption of information based on breaking news and sports etc. Now-a-days, many people use to purchase goods over the phone rather than using desktops and Laptops. When we talk about different devices like TV, pc and other ways of consuming medium, mobile is the one we have with us in our pocket.

The World Has Gone mo·bile

As we all know, the popularity of mobile technologies has skyrocketed in the past few years.  With mobile devices being the "popular kids" in today's society, people are more willing and able to stay in the loop with social networking.  With a swift reach into our pocket, we are able to check in at our favourite hot spot online, check out what are friends are doing and see how friends and family near and far have been spending their time.  Not only can we stay in the loop socially, but social networking has enabled us to remotely stay on top of other responsibilities such as school and work without even having to step foot into the workplace or school to obtain important files, deadlines or information.

So what exactly does mobile mean?
Well by definition mobile means "Capable of moving or being moved readily from place to place".  This seems to be favourable in a high paced society where nobody seems to have enough time and with the combination of features such as Facebook, Twitter, Email and Remote log ins, there's no telling where the possibilities will end.
